One of the most important things in life is self-care. And we typically aren’t very good at it. So many of us are caregivers and put others first, almost as a spiritual practice. But we have it wrong. As long as we take time to care for ourselves in body, mind and spirit, we will have the energy to care for others.
You know what you need, but do you gift yourself it? Do you take enough quiet time to nourish your soul? Do you get enough sleep, exercise or good nutrition? Do you consciously play or laugh or have fun every day?
Take a look at your life as a wheel of all the things you manage and juggle and notice where you might be out of balance – if only a little.
Find a way today to do something to enhance the areas that are deficit. Add some fun in the perhaps, or a 10 minute cat nap in the middle of the day. When you don’t have time. Or take a five minute walk outside to move your body, quiet your mind and breathe in nature.
I have been running with lots of travel, grandkids and too much computer work on my plate. When I arrived home late Monday and dove into a nonstop day Tuesday, my body revolted. It came down with a doozy of a cold. So much that I didn’t’ do much of anything at all yesterday except rest and renew.
Catch yourself before you go down. Honor your body and soul as much or more as you do your other commitments.
In the end, it will all be alright, but you might as well step back and enjoy the ride a bit more!
